Mr Patterson contacted Cotswold Heating Solutions after their heating engineer flagged a corroding heat exchanger in the 12-year-old gas boiler at their semi-detached home in Kidlington, near Oxford. The quote to replace the boiler alone, on top of the power flush their sludged-up radiators badly needed and an ageing hot water cylinder that was already on borrowed time, came to far more than they’d expected. Rather than replace like-for-like and face the same conversation again in another decade, they wanted to look at whether going fully electric made sense.
We arranged a free survey of the property, assessing glazing and insulation room by room and talking through what removing the gas system entirely would involve. With the boiler, radiators, cylinder and associated pipework due to come out regardless, it made sense to go electric throughout rather than patch in a replacement. We suggested a Sunamp Thermino heat battery for their household (two adults, a teenager, and two bathrooms) to replace the old cylinder, and talked through the RadTherm® App and the 900-plus colour options available for the radiators. The Pattersons chose a clean white finish to match their existing decor throughout.
On installation day, the old boiler, radiators and cylinder were removed and the redundant gas supply to the heating system was safely capped off at the meter. This enabled them to contact their energy supplier to arrange a removal of the gas meter and as a result – no more monthly standing charge to pay! The Sunamp Thermino was considerably smaller than the hot water cylinder it replaced, thereby freeing up a useful amount of space in the airing cupboard. radTherm® radiators went in room by room, and once everything was live we balanced the system to the temperatures the family wanted: 21°C in the living areas, 17–18°C in the bedrooms, and a slightly warmer setting in the family bathroom.
When we followed up, Mrs Patterson said the change she’d noticed most was simply not thinking about the boiler any more – no more bracing for the annual service call-out, no more listening for odd noises from the airing cupboard, and hot water that recovers noticeably faster than the old cylinder ever did, whilst proving far more economical to use.
